Los Angeles doesn’t get a traditional winter, but for a few months, I act like it does. Mostly because writing about winter fashion gives me FOMO, so I start adding cozy knitwear to my closet. But by the end of January, I’m ready to embrace the weather actually happening outside my door. Fortunately for me, there are plenty of great early spring arrivals to shop across retailers like J.Crew, Nordstrom, Gap, and more.
The key to shopping the season early is to only half commit; I’m not buying floral dresses quite yet. Instead, I’m snagging some lighter, brighter pieces I can layer with. Think colorful knits, long-sleeve mini dresses, and lightwash jeans. Below, shop the 10 transitional styles I’m eyeing, starting at $63.

J.Crew Brushed Cashmere Sweater Shell
$118 at J. Crew
I’m bringing J.Crew’s editor-favorite, uber cozy cashmere into spring with this knit tank. It’s a major upgrade from your standard tank top in both quality and look—that fuzzy texture makes any basic outfit instantly more exciting while still being incredibly versatile. Right now, I’ll be wearing this under my favorite blazer, but in late spring, I’ll let the top stand alone.
Topshop Techy Maxi Skirt
$65 at Nordstrom
A maxi skirt will always be one of my early-spring essentials, and this year I’m loving this A-line style from Topshop. It’s got an easy elastic waistband and a little bit of volume. That shape allows this skirt to be the star of the show if you keep the styling really simple—think a white tee and loafers—but because it’s black, it’s easy to wear every day. I’m really into the idea of wearing this with a super colorful knit top (like this one) and matching statement pumps.
Banana Republic the Oversized Shirt
$90 at Gap.com
Banana Republic’s oversized button-down in this bright green color might actually be the first early spring item I’m adding to my cart. It has a lot to do with that green—I’m kind of obsessed with dopamine dressing—but I also really like its oversized fit. A giant button-down over a pair of straight-leg jeans will always look good, but because it’s so roomy, I can also treat it like a super lightweight jacket, wearing it unbuttoned over a white tee.
Gola Elan Sneakers
$110 at Anthropologie
As much as I love black boots, I’m ready for something lighter and brighter—namely, these baby pink sneakers from Gola. Shoppers say this low-top style is “so easy and comfy to wear” and that the shoe’s bright colorways—it’s available in nine shades—can “elevate any casual look.”
Reformation Liora Dress
$248 at Reformation
Long-sleeve mini dresses are, IMO, the perfect transitional piece. You can rock them in winter with some tights and knee-high boots, and then, when spring actually arrives, swap them out for a simple pair of ballet flats. This year, Reformation’s Liora dress is the one I keep coming back to. It pairs a crisp collar with a pleated mini skirt for a look that’s cute, classy, and (with some tights) office appropriate.
L.A. weather has me ready to embrace early spring fashion, so I’m grabbing a few staples to incorporate into my winter wardrobe. Below, shop more warm weather staples I’m eyeing.
