This silhouette is so American Apparel-coded.
Cast your mind back ten years and you may remember that there was one staple item that every woman had in her wardrobe: the skater skirt, probably from American Apparel. It was the era of New Girl and Tumblr, and silhouettes everywhere were distinctly A-line. Since then, skirts have shifted away from the skater—instead, floaty maxis, satin midis, and form-fitting minis are all the rage. But Reese Witherspoon just brought back the iconic 2010s skirt trend in the most subtle way.
Attending a New York screening of her upcoming film You’re Cordially Invited, the actress wore a black two-piece set featuring a a round-neck, zip up jacket with gold hardware and a ruffled peplum detail and a matching skater miniskirt. The skirt featured ruffled tiers that added to the nostalgic 2010s silhouette. Overall, the look felt like a new spin on the little black dress—complete with plenty of ruffles and a throwback silhouette.
Witherspoon wore black heels and kept her shoulder-length blonde hair down and parted slightly to the side.
This isn’t the first time Witherspoon has put a twist on the classic LBD. In fact, just a couple of months ago, she donned a simple black dress with an asymmetrical sparkle detail around the neckline, while she wore a similar one-shoulder LBD just a few weeks earlier.
Witherspoon stars in Prime's You're Cordially Invited alongside Will Ferrell. The film takes place at a venue that has accidentally double booked two weddings—while Witherspoon is the sister of one bride, Ferrell is the father of the other.
Speaking on the red carpet of the UK premiere earlier in the week, Witherspoon said that the film felt like “a classic 1930s movie.” She went on, “I went home that day and thought, ‘That was one of the best scenes I’ve ever done in my whole life.'”
You're Cordially Invited will be available for streaming January 30 on Prime Video.
