It’s the most convenient to use, too.
When I began using LED face masks, there were very few options on the market. In fact, the first one I remember seeing is Dr. Dennis Gross’s SpectraLite FaceWare Pro LED Mask. Fast forward a decade(s) and they’re a dime a dozen. As is a fortunate part of my job, I try each and every model that makes its way to me. At this point, I’ve tried at least 13 masks, but I remain dedicated to the one from Dr. Dennis Gross.
There is a lot of snake oil in the beauty industry, but there is actual science behind LED skin treatments. To put it simply, LED treatment works by emitting infrared light pulses that penetrate beyond the superficial layer of the skin. When I use the Dr. Dennis Gross SpectraLite FaceWare Pro LED Mask regularly, I see a slew of results, from a brighter complexion to faded hyperpigmentation and fewer breakouts. Additionally, my under-eyes look less sallow and my wrinkles (one horizontally across the forehead and two laugh lines) are not as deep.

The Dr. Dennis Gross mask has three settings. The first one uses red light and is best for anti-aging as it softens wrinkles, promotes collagen production, and brightens skin. The second one is blue light that’s great for everything acne-related—it kills breakout-causing bacteria and soothes existing blemishes and redness. The last setting is a combination of the two. Each treatment lasts three minutes and automatically shuts off when it’s done. I typically do all three modes, even if it is theoretically repetitive.
But why choose the DDG mask over the other options on the market, many of which are cheaper? First off, it’s more effective—the DDG mask is a Rolls Royce whereas its competition is a Hyundai at best and a horse-drawn carriage at worst. Second, and almost as important as my previous point, is the incredible convenience and ease of use. The sessions are three minutes, which means even the laziest person (me) can sneak this into their routine. Plus, unlike its modern competitors, it’s just one piece—it doesn’t have a heavy wire that attaches to a remote that awkwardly hangs off your face. Third, I like that it is a solid and structured mask; I find the flexible silicone ones to be difficult to secure and uncomfortable.
The TL;DR is that as a beauty editor, I have access to basically every LED face mask but I remain loyal to Dr. Dennis Gross’s SpectraLite FaceWare Pro LED Mask. Shop it at Dermstore and Amazon, plus check out more of my favorite skin care gadgets below.
