In fashion, there are few things quite as polarizing as one’s jean preferences. Skinny jean fans will recoil at the thought of floating around in an extra-baggy silhouette, while wide-leg devotees would rather go pantless than attempt to squeeze into skin-tight denim. You’re either in one camp or the other! There are, however, a handful of trendsetters who can exist in both worlds. One such style star? Bella Hadid. The supermodel has experimented with just about every jean silhouette over the years. But her latest pair of denim somehow straddle both sides of the great jean debate.
Bundling up in New York City this morning, Hadid emerged in a fur-lined coat that was paired with an extreme pair of flared jeans. Above the knee, they are as skintight as jeans can be—practically a skinny jean—yet they also flared out at the ankle, grazing the floor. Is this Hadid’s way of slowly ushering in the return of skinnys, which have largely fallen out of favor since the 2010s? A subtle way of dipping her way back into the trend, so to speak?
If so, Hadid is not alone in her appreciation of skinny jeans: Labels such as Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, and Miu Miu have all shown extra-tight denim on the runways in recent seasons. Perhaps fashion as a whole is finally ready to revive the look, after seasons and seasons of baggy and wide-legs dominating the catwalk. If you’re pro-baggy, consider it a fair warning—because when Hadid puts her stamp of approval on something, it’s only a matter of time before it becomes a full-on fashion movement. Then again, no one is forcing you to wear skinny jeans—wear what you want!
