What a year it’s been for the French director Coralie Fargeat. Thanks to her 2024 film The Substance, starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley—two performances that had everyone talking—Fargeat has been thrust into the 2025 awards season race. And tonight, the film is nominated for several Golden Globe awards, including a nod for best director.
Knowing it was her moment in the spotlight, it was unsurprising that Fargeat brought out a striking fashion look for the occasion. On the red carpet, she chose a sculptural Balenciaga look that proved once again that directors can bring as much fashion drama as any A-list star.
Styled by Rose Forde, Fargeat opted for a design from the house’s spring 2025 collection, consisting of an asymmetric bustier gown in black coated nylon, complete with the label’s shiny stretch Pantashoes (yes, they’re a thing!). The avant-garde silhouette was the perfect mixture of demure yet eye-catching—and rebuked the idea that directors cannot have as much fun with fashion as their leading stars. While Hollywood filmmakers have typically gone the classic or traditional route, Fargeat infused the step and repeat with a dose of individuality—and it ruled. Mark our words: She is set to be one of the coolest style stars to watch this awards season.
