Awards season is officially here! The 2025 Golden Globes are especially early this year, kicking the party off on January 5. The Globes are said to be the most fun awards show (read: the only one with an open bar), so we’re expecting a lively start to the season, emceed with aplomb by Nikki Glaser.
The 2024 Globes attendees didn’t come to play, bringing capes, veils, sequins, and—chiefly—fun to the red carpet. So we’ve got high expectations for the fashion fans among this year’s cohort: Zendaya, Mikey Madison, Saoirse Ronan, Colman Domingo, and Danielle Deadwyler among them.
Below Vogue’s fashion writers Christian Allaire and Hannah Jackson discuss what they’re hoping to see on the red carpet this coming awards season.
Christian Allaire: Hi Hannah! First of all, let’s start with what movies we are excited about being on the awards season roster. Personally, some of my favorite films of the year were Challengers, A Complete Unknown, The Substance, and Wicked. Still dying to see Anora, The Last Showgirl, and Maria. What about you?
Hannah Jackson: Christian! Thank you soooo much for asking. My favorite films of the year were Anora, Conclave, and Challengers and—if I was a betting woman—I’d put money on Conclave taking Best Picture. I also just saw Babygirl and A Real Pain, both of which I really enjoyed. I could definitely see Kieran Culkin walking away with a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Oscars.
CA: A lot of these movies’ leading actors have been making their press rounds for the film. We have a bit of a teaser, then, in terms of what to expect come the awards season red carpet. What are the stars that have stood out to you fashion-wise?
HJ: Well I know we’ve both been kvelling over Mikey Madison and her movie star transformation. I’ve also been captivated by Saoirse Ronan this season, thanks to her recent work with Danielle Goldberg. The two have absolutely nailed movie star elegance in a really modern way. Huge kudos to Nicolas Ghesquière and the Louis Vuitton team for creating so many lovely, unexpected gowns for her. It just goes to show that these classically elegant awards season-friendly looks don’t have to be boring! I also really appreciate her eagerness to break away from the traditional and try out younger, more avant garde brands like Hodakova and Colleen Allen. Who are you obsessing over?
CA: I have been loving Mikey Madison’s Anora looks. She and stylist Jamie Mizrahi have, I think, found the right balance of Old Hollywood glam, yet still making it feel modern and fresh. I also think there is something really elegant and chic about Angelina Jolie’s press tour style for Maria—very understated, often in a black Saint Laurent gown or suit. The film’s costumes are (from what I have seen) very elaborate and theatrical, and I find it interesting she went the opposite route. No method dressing here! Ditto for Pamela Anderson, a subtle stealthy-chic star.
Let’s talk about what we hope to see on the red carpets. What are you hoping that celebrities will experiment with fashion-wise?
HJ: I always love when stars give smaller brands a chance. I was really pleasantly surprised that Florence Pugh chose a Del Core dress (remember, the one with the floating straps?) for the 2024 Oscars, and Lily Gladstone wore that collaboration between Gucci and Joe Big Mountain. Obviously, it’s a tall order to ask nominees to throw caution to the wind and take a big risk like that, but that’s also why we tend to like the smaller awards shows better—they’re more fun! What’s top of mind for you before the Golden Globes?
CA: I mainly hope to see a sense of fun and risk-taking. There is a lot of pressure around awards season and looking your best, but I think stars often get caught up in that versus remembering how fun and unserious fashion should be. The goal of these awards is to celebrate the work, so why not pick a look that feels just as upbeat? Let loose! Are there any collections or designs you want to see make a cameo on the carpet?
HJ: While I did chronicle some predictions, I’m looking forward to seeing Alessandro Michele’s Valentino on the carpet. Not only has his exuberance been lacking from awards season since he left Gucci, I’m curious to see him get into the custom game post-Apple Martin at Le Bal. Otherwise, I was a fan of Bowen Yang wearing Bode to the Emmys and would love to see more from them on the awards circuit. Christopher John Rogers and Diotima would also be very welcome sights! What about you, Christian? What designers and collections are you hoping to see?
CA: I definitely would love to see one of the Alaïa dresses from spring have a moment; I love how clean and bodycon they are, in a way that feels tasteful. I am always down for a moment of haunted romance via McQueen. This Prada dress lives rent free in my head, and I would love to see it on an A-lister. (Without the rain coat, though I loved that on the runway.) The sculptural Loewe floral frocks from spring also demand a red carpet moment (even if Ayo Edebiri has already worn one).
I also want to see celebrities not just pulling off the runway. This is the moment for original custom designs—an opportunity for designers to delight in unexpected ways. And I hope that stars will continue the trend of reviving archival designs; I love when vintage dresses or suits are revived and feel just as fresh in the current times. To me, that is smart styling, and a reminder that the best clothes are the ones that can live on for years and years.
