Jo and Laurie forever. Lady Bird and Kyle, not so much. On stage in London last night, we were treated to a special reunion of everyone’s favorite scene partners, Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet.
Ronan, who stars in The Outrun and Blitz, reunited with A Complete Unknown star Chalamet for a special event hosted by the British Film Institute and Vanity Fair at London’s BFI Southbank on Wednesday evening (December 19). The pair got involved in a Q&A and reflected on the work they had done together and their then-flowering careers.
And for the special, intimate occasion, both Ronan and Chalamet brought some of their strongest looks of the season so far. Ronan, styled by Danielle Goldberg, opted for a Khaite Spring 2025 dress, a textured and sculpted funnel necked dress in soft pink organza, adding a silk black floor-length underskirt with barely there black sandals. Chalamet stuck to his, so far, quite successful and laidback formula, forgoing his recent Bob Dylan cosplay for a distressed and stiff collared brown leather jacket with a bright yellow shirt, khaki cargo jeans, and white trainers. The mustache remains.
While it was a clash in style, it was not in vibes. The pair had a warm reunion on stage, with Chalamet lolloping toward Ronan to give her a bear hug. They took the time to reflect on their parallel come ups, pivotal career moments together, and a special, enduring friendship through it all. The duo first worked together on Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird in 2017, and later on Gerwig’s Little Women in 2019. “We’re really lucky that the two of us are doing really well, and our paths can continue to cross,” Ronan said. Clips from both films were shown that highlighted their impressive, intense scene partnership.
Chalamet shared that he first heard about Ronan through Emery Cohen, who had worked with Ronan on Brooklyn in 2016. “I kept hearing this name ‘Saoirse, Saoirse’ and didn’t put two and two together when I saw the name spelled out, because I’m an ignorant American, but then we got to work and I was just blown away immediately,” he said.
“Everyone was sort at a genesis, especially on Lady Bird,” Chalamet added of their intertwining successes. “It was a small production and I feel like we had no clue how well received it was going to be.”
And as their careers continue to expand, so too does their style. Ronan’s ongoing collaboration with Goldberg has seen her step out in fresh off the runway pieces, archival pieces, and buzzy younger labels. She’s tapped JW Anderson, Phoebe Philo-era Celine, and LVMH Prize winner Hodokova to revitalise her style. Turns on the red carpet so far have looked to show-stopping Louis Vuitton and Schiaparelli.
Chalamet has been having a lot of fun, becoming Chemena Kamali’s first Chloé it-boy with a custom suede jacket that recalls the aesthetic of a young Dylan. He topped a year of method dressing with his appearance at the New York premiere of A Complete Unknown, mimicking a surly-looking Bob Dylan’s appearance at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival—feat. blond bangs and a beanie.
Ronan’s husband Jack Lowden, who she co-produced her film The Outrun with, was in the audience. Both Chalamet and Ronan are on the awards season path and tipped for big accolades in the coming months, so expect to see more reunions on the red carpet, and the pair rooting for each other always.
