The celebrity embodiment of Christmas—Mariah Carey, who else—was on track to keep our spirits high as she usually does with a string of festive concerts. But then Carey got sick with the flu, and was forced to cancel the first show of her 2024 Christmas Time tour. More cancellations followed, lambs left heartbroken for the holidays. You can’t keep the self-styled Queen of Christmas down though, and Carey was able to perform her show at the Barclays Center in New York—even taking some time to sign Rihanna’s chest.
Photographed prior to the show (December 17), a still on-the-mend Mariah opted for a self-care-led ’fit: she wore a comfy looking grey sweatsuit, a long and dark fur coat, and stacked black platform shoes (this is Mariah Carey after all, a superstar take on high-low dressing). She kept her round and rectangular sunglasses on, her hood up over her bouncy blowout. Because divas can and will be cozy too. Did we all know Carey is a wired headphones girl too? A true comfort, never fearing the death of her AirPods during a pre-show meditation.
Her stage looks, of course, have leaned into the high-glam and Christmas cheering sparkles— on stage, she wears a three-dimensional, cloud-like shawl studded with stars, and a glitzy silver, strapless gown with a fishtail.
Carey should be approaching some rightfully deserved downtime—last week, she found success once again with “All I Want For Christmas Is You” hitting No 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (again).
In less than a week too, Carey will bring festive cheer to the NFL’s Christmas day game, headlining the opening between the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers. The performance will air on Netflix. Until then, stay cozy (and maybe swap the sky-high boots for your slippers).
