Method dressing may be a controversial red carpet tactic, but Nicole Kidman has just shown how a subtle sartorial nod to a project can sometimes be the perfect solution. While attending the Los Angeles premiere to the upcoming A24 erotic thriller, Babygirl, Kidman paid homage to the film’s title with a breathtaking dress that was literally covered in soft baby pink organza flowers. The strapless gown featured a fitted waist before cascading down in a long, luxurious train behind her. In another nod to girlhood, the gown featured a black bow tied around Kidman’s waist.
The custom Balenciaga gown pays homage to the fashion house’s iconic 1964 collection that featured a range of ultra feminine trailing evening gowns.
Kidman wore her hair in a low updo with soft strands hanging elegantly around her face. She kept her jewerly simple and subtle, opting for only a few silver rings and a pair of pink diamond drop earrings. As for her makeup, Kidman went for soft pink tones to complement her dress.
Her co-star, Harris Dickinson's black leather jacket and slicked back hair was a nod to the film's edgier side.
In Babygirl, Kidman plays Romy, a powerful CEO who seems to "have it all"—a high-powered job, a loving husband, a gigantic house, two lovely teenage daughters, and a wardrobe filled with sleek silk blouses with pussy bows. But when she beings a sexy affair with an enigmatic intern (Dickinson), her life is soon turned upside down as she is finds herself confronting the parts of her psyche she tried to ignore for so many years.
As Kidman revealed during a conversation following a recent screening of the film, the sexual nature of the film sometimes became a little too demanding.
"There was an enormous amount of sharing and trust and then frustration. It's like, 'Don't touch me,'" she said. “There were times when we were shooting where I was like, ‘I don’t want to [simulate] orgasm any more. Don’t come near me. I hate doing this. I don’t care if I am never touched again in my life! I’m over it.’"
Sometimes, Kidman even asked to put a pause on filming, describing the feeling as “burnout.”
However, Kidman explained that the film's director, Halina Reijn, would comfort her when she felt overwhelmed. "At some point I was like, I don’t want to be touched. I don’t want to do this anymore, but at the same time I was compelled to do it. Halina would hold me and I would hold her, because it was just very confronting to me,” she recalled. “It’s like, golly, I’m doing this, and it’s actually now going to be seen by the world. That’s a very weird feeling. This is something you do and hide in your home videos. It is not a thing that normally is going to be seen by the world…I felt very exposed as an actor, as a woman, as a human being."
