Olivia Rodrigo has long been loving archival fashion on and off the red carpet, snapped in corseted Jean Paul Gaultier, show-stopping Versace, and ’90s Betsy Johnson slips. In her latest appearance at the Variety Hitmakers Brunch in Los Angeles, she ventured into new vintage territory.
The Guts singer wore a Mugler Fall Winter 1998 runway look, namely, a velvet trim hourglass mini dress with a wraparound halterneck. No bag necessary—it has pockets. On her feet, she stayed faithful to Saint Laurent, choosing the Scandale patent leather wedge sandals. She forewent any jewelry and wore her long hair pulled back into a tight, slick ponytail, with just a hint of a ’90s brown lip.
Rodrigo posed on the carpet and inside the venue with fellow pop girl phenomenons Charli xcx, Laufey, and Caroline Polachek. She was there to present the Producer of the Year award to super producer Dan Nigro, who has worked with both Rodrigo and Chappell Roan.
90s Mugler is quite often the viable vintage option for the Kardashian-Jenners, for its space-age vixen aesthetics, corset-indebted silhouettes, and sensual juxtaposition of strong black materials against bare skin.
Kendall has worn a fire engine red, peplumed skirt suit from the same era as Rodrigo's look, and both Kim and Kylie showed us their Mugler scholar credentials when they threw it back to the spring/summer 1998 couture collection for two slinky looks at the Academy Museum Gala in October. Still, this pull was very much in keeping with Rodrigo’s own soft and feminine style, sans jewelry and with fresh, minimal makeup.
Rodrigo works often with stylist Danielle Goldberg, who’s been doing sartorial alchemy with Saoirse Ronan of recent.
