Bianca Jagger doesn't take the word libre lightly. The French word, which translates to free in English, is actually one of the focuses of her life. “I was born and grew up under the repressive regime of the Somoza Dynasty,” the Nicaraguan human rights defender, actor, and fashion icon tells me. “From an early age, I understood that the only way I could stand up to a repressive regime was to fight for freedom every day. Because of that, my very existence is an act of rebellion.”
Today, Jagger is the newest trailblazer to join a project by YSL Beauty for it's Libre fragrance, shot by Tyler Mitchell. (She’s in gorgeous, fantastic-smelling company: Hailey Bieber is part of the collective, too.) It’s not only the newest member of YSL Beauty’s Libre family, Flowers & Flames, that Jagger was drawn to, but the overall message of the scent, too. “The title of this fragrance, of Libre, or Free, was attractive to me because that’s the quintessential objective of what I do every day in my personal life and in my foundation.”
A love of flowers and the gorgeous scent they provide is just one of the many things Jagger learned from her mother. “She would take me for walks through the rainforest and through her, I discovered orchids and wild flowers.” But when it comes to her own legacy, the matriarch (who has great-grandchildren) is passing on something else that her mother also cherished: education.
“Education is one of the most profound and enduring gifts you can bestow upon your descendants. It is not merely about imparting knowledge or skill, but about fostering a foundation for curiosity, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning. Through education, you empower future generations with the ability to adapt, innovate, and thrive in an ever-changing world. This is what I want for everybody from my daughter to my great-grandchildren to the rest of the world.”
When asked what it’s been like to be referred to as a “beauty icon” time and time again, Jagger shares that she feels honored. “It makes me feel young. I’m so interested in the youth and why they think and feel the way they do about everything, from the environment to style and beauty.”
For Jagger, a spritz of Libre is much more than just a bit of perfume. “It makes me feel like a free woman. Which is the most beautiful way to feel when that is the existential objective in your life.”
