She has some wickedly cool ink.
Ariana Grande has a thing for tattoos. Not only has she sung about them (cue “Tattooed Heart” and “7 Rings”), but she has amassed quite a collection of ink. The singer-songwriter-actress got her first piece of body art when she was 19 years old in 2012, and since then, she has slowly covered herself in more than 60 designs, according to People.
Grande’s tats range from dainty, fine line creations to large, intricate illustrations, and literally span from her neck down to her toes. They almost all hold sentimental value, paying tribute to her loved ones, such as her late ex-boyfriend Mac Miller and her nonna; commemorating tracks off her seven studio albums; showing love for her favorite films; and paying tribute to her biggest milestones, such as landing the role of her dreams, Glinda in Wicked.
Over the years, Grande’s tattoos have made headlines, sometimes due to their sweet meanings and other times due to silly mishaps, such as her Japanese tattoo that translated to “small barbecue grill” instead of “7 rings” (more on that below). The “eternal sunshine” singer has also received attention for covering up a number of her pieces, both inking over tattoos she got with past flames (like Pete Davidson) and layering them with makeup for certain events.
While getting permanently inked is a big, serious commitment for some people, Grande sees tattoos as a natural mode of expression. “When they come to me, I just get them,” she told Allure in 2023. Read ahead for a breakdown of her designs.
"Mille Tendresse" on Her Neck
Grande has the French words "mille tendresse" in black cursive on the back of her neck. The phrase translates to "a thousand tendernesses," and was reportedly inspired by the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany's
"Bellissima" on Her Back
The “yes, and?” singer has “bellissima,” the Italian word for “beautiful” and the nickname Grande’s grandfather gave to her, written in black cursive on her left rib cage.
A Crescent Moon on Her Neck
The Scream Queens star has an outline of a crescent moon on the right of her neck.
"Hi" and a Heart on Her Toes
Grande has the word "Hi" in small lettering on her toe, and a heart on another.
A Bee Behind Her Ear
Grande and some of her crew members got matching bee designs as a tribute to the tragic Manchester attack in May 2017. She placed hers behind her left ear.
"REM" Under Her Ear
Grande paid tribute to her fourth studio album, Sweetener, by getting "REM," the name of the fourth track, under her right ear.
Chihiro on Her Forearm
Grande, a big fan of Hayao Miyazaki's films, got Chihiro, the main character in the 2001 animated film Spirited Away, tattooed on her left forearm. She shared a photo of the piece to her Instagram story and explained its significance. Over the course of the movie, Chihiro faces her fears and grows into a "courageous, quick-witted, and reliable girl."
A Moon and Stars on Her Foot
The Victorious alum got a cluster of fine-line stars and a moon on her foot in 2018.
"Let's Sing" on Her Arm
Grande has the phrase "let's sing" in Japanese tattooed on her left inner elbow.
A Moon, Sun, and Stars on Her Hand
The Grammy winner kept the celestial theme going after she was named Woman of the Year by Billboard in 2018. She commemorated the milestone with an abstract, fine-line tattoo of a crescent moon with a face, a sun, and stylized stars.
Leaves on Her Ribs
Grande used to have a tattoo of the word "always" in her ex-fiancé Pete Davidson's handwriting on her left ribcage. In 2019, she added a stem of leaves, but clarified she wasn't trying to hide her former tattoo. "Post run thrus, 3 am with @girlknewyork 🙂 not a cover up just evolvin," she captioned an Instagram post.
Eevee on Her Arm
The multi-hyphenate collected another character when she got the Pokémon character Eevee tattooed on her left upper arm in 2019.
"7 Rings" on Her Hand
Grande intended to commemorate her hit song "7 Rings" off her fifth studio album, Thank U, Next, by getting the track title in Japanese. However, instead, the two characters she got inked described a small barbecue grill. Grande responded to fans who pointed out the mistake in since-deleted tweets: "Indeed, I left out 'つの指,' which should have gone in between. It hurt like f*ck n still looks tight. I wouldn't have lasted one more symbol lmao. But this spot also peels a ton and won't last so if I miss it enough I'll suffer thru the whole thing next time." She added, "also…huge fan of tiny bbq grills."
Grande went back to the tattoo parlor a while later to try to get it fixed. "Slightly better. Thanks to my tutor for helping me fix and to @kanenavasard for being a legend. And to my doctor for the lidocaine shots (no joke). Rip tiny charcoal grill. Miss u man. I actually really liked u," she shared.
"The Truman Show" Quote on Her Back
Grande and her cousin Courtney Chipolone paid tribute to one of their favorite movies The Truman Show with a quote from the cult-classic: "In case I don't see ya good afternoon good evening and good night!"
An Angel Wing on Her Ear
Grande got an itty-bitty angel wing tattooed on the inner part of her right ear.
"Myron" on Her Ankle
The singer-songwriter used to have the number 8418, the firefighter badge number of Davidson's late father, Scott Davidson, on her ankle. Her ex-flame has the same tattoo on his forearm. Grande covered the piece with "Myron," the name of her dog, whom she once shared with her ex-boyfriend Mac Miller.
"Toulouse" on Her Hand
Grande honored her other dog Toulouse by getting his name tattooed across her left hand in black cursive script.
Butterflies on Her Arm
Grande has two delicate butterflies flying up her left arm, once of which is darker in shading than the other.
"SWT" on Her Finger
The "Positions" singer got "SWT," short for Sweetener World Tour, ahead of her final tour show in Los Angeles on December 22, 2019.
A flower on Her Left Palm
Grande has a floral design inked on the bottom of her left palm.
"Court" on Her Knee
The "Break free" songstress got "Court," the name of one of her best friends, tattooed on her left knee, her first leg tattoo.
"Baby" on Her Arm
Grande has the word "baby" written in faint cursive lettering on the back on her left arm.
Patchwork Designs on Her Left Hand
Grande has more than 10 designs on the fingers of her left hand. She has a Venus symbol; a small cloud, which she got when she was dating Davidson; “561,” the area code for her hometown, Boca Raton, Florida; “reborn,” a matching tattoo she got with Davidson and later covered up with a branch; “Pete,” also for Davidson, which she covered with a solid black heart; several arrows; black dots; an evil eye; and “Cinderella,” the name of one of Miller’s songs.
Patchwork Designs on Her Right Hand
The pop star kept the theme going on her right hand with "Honeymoon," the name of her first album; "Baby doll," the nickname given to her by her Nonna; an outline of a black heart; "אלד," a Hebrew phrase that means "guarding and protecting"; an "A" for one of her best friends Alexa; "Lumos," a Harry Potter spell that produces light, which she may have since covered up with a branch; "H2GKMO," the acronym for "Honest to God, Knock Me Out"; "9 3/4," another Harry Potter reference which she since covered with a branch of laurel leaves; "GWS," short for her song "Get Well Soon"; "XV," which represents her wedding date to Dalton Gomez, May 15, 2021; "for good," in honor of Wicked; a flower; a Saturn doodle; and an umbrella.
Glinda on Her Hand
Grande once again commemorated her role of a lifetime, Glinda in Wicked, with a tattoo. This time, she got a design of her character on her right hand.
"When they come to me, I just get them. This one I knew I wanted to get for a very long time. This is my most recent one," she told Allure in an August 2023 interview. "It's Glinda from the original L. Frank Baum book. I waited forever to fill up this hand. And I thought, 'I'm gonna wait for the right thing to come along,' and yeah, that felt very right."
An "E" on Her Leg
The Wicked love didn't stop. Grande and her costar Cynthia Erivo got matching heart tattoos on the back of their legs. Grande's had an "E" for Elphaba, while Erivo's had a "G" for Glinda.
