Last night, Elie Saab celebrated its 1,001st season with a star-studded show in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Along with the label’s signature glitzy designs, the presentation featured performances from stars such as Jennifer Lopez, Céline Dion, Camila Cabello, Nancy Ajram, and Amr Diab. (Talk about budget!) But one of the most-discussed moments of the night? Halle Berry making a surprise cameo on the catwalk in her iconic Elie Saab look from the 2002 Oscars, when she became the first Black woman to win best actress for her role in Monster’s Ball.
The dress—featuring a mesh torso embroidered with florals and a draped silk-taffeta skirt—remains one of the greatest red carpet looks in Oscars history. “There are some moments in life that just happen and they change our lives forever! Winning an Academy Award in my Elie Saab gown was one of those moments for me,” Berry wrote on Instagram. “Thank you Mr. Saab for being a part of the tapestry of my life as we have been inextricably connected for 22 years now! It was my honor to celebrate you and your 1001 seasons.” Incredibly, Berry revived the look with zero alterations.
As for other highlights from the fashion spectacle? Céline Dion stunning the crowd when she hit the stage in an ethereal sequined cape-gown to perform “The Power of Love” and “I’m Alive.” (Shortly before the performance, she also walked the red carpet in a floral frock, styled by Law Roach.) Jennifer Lopez performed a medley of hits in a crystal-encrusted bodysuit and feather boa, while Camila Cabello sang “Havana” in an elegant floral chiffon gown. The whole production was giving Victoria’s Secret—which is to say, a full-on fashion extravaganza. It was certainly an appropriate way for the Lebanese designer to ring in 1,001 seasons; here’s to 1,001 more.
