Nobody turns up like the singer and NARS global brand ambassador.
Night Moves explores going out through the lens of beauty. Describe your perfect night out.
What’s so funny is I’m such a simple girl. I just need a place where I can have the best music, everything from ’90s hip hop to EDM vibes, to even some salsa music and Afrobeats. If the DJ can have some fun, take me through cool eras in music, and make me want to stay turned up, that’s all I need. And also, I have to say, this is not because it’s my rum, but with my Ten to One Rum margarita—which is the margarita with my white rum in place of the traditional spirit—oh my gosh, the night is lit. Good music, a space I can dance, and a little sip of Ten to One Rum? The night is perfect for me.
What are your top getting-ready tracks?
Oh my gosh. I like “redrum” by 21 Savage. It’s so good! “MONACO” by Bad Bunny is also so good. “UNAVAILABLE” by Davido. And then it’s an older one, but “love nwantiti” by CKay. Oh, and Tyla’s “Water”!
If you could get ready with any famous person, dead or alive, who would it be?
Princess Diana! I think she’s cool because even though she was a princess and a member of the royal family, she was such a girl’s girl still. People loved her for breaking the norm and not doing what was expected of her in her role. And a lot of girls adored and looked up to her. And she was a fashion queen!
Describe your process for choosing a look for the night.
Now that I have my little ones, I can say getting ready for me…I just don’t like overthinking the process. I always try to check my mood, if I’m feeling like I want to be extra. Sometimes, I’m a tomboy. Sometimes I have moments when I want to be a bit more girly or glamorous. No matter what, there’s always a little edge. But oftentimes, I check my mood. Is my mood feeling like I want to turn up the sexy, or I want to be sexy but comfortable? It’s all about the mood. And those moods can vary for me. But I do a mood check, and then I start to envision what I am feeling. Like, what do I want? What is my hair? Am I a blonde girl right now? Am I dark hair? Am I curly hair? Those things matter, too. So then I say, “Okay, I’m kind of feeling like this.” Do I want to be comfortably cute, or am I down for hold-my-breath kind of cute? Because it takes time to make a major moment. Sometimes, when you try to make a major moment, you have to hold your breath. So, I do the mood check, which sets everything off.
As you’re getting ready, what products are guaranteed to be on your vanity and why?
I’m really excited about the Explicit Collection and the whole movement. I really love how NARS is focusing on encouraging people to be boldly themselves—essentially be explicit and confidently you. And I’m really obsessed with this new collection. I love the Unauthorized classic red color. It’s really amazing. It’s long-lasting. It’s also smudge-resistant, which is really key. I think when you wear red lipstick, it’s so important that it performs at the highest level. Us girls are all about the red—you do it, you are bold with it, you are explicit with it. But we also can’t have red lipstick all over the place. Something else that I really love is the Radiant Creamy concealer. I’m a big natural makeup kind of girl, especially when life is moving so fast.
When I’m trying to rush out the door, I don’t have much time to give my face a full beat. But I’ve learned that if you have a good concealer and mascara, highlight your T-zones…. Honestly, if you hit those spaces and then have a nice lip. I’m also a big peachy nude kind of girl on an everyday basis. So, I live in the peachy pinky nudes kind of world, especially for the natural do-and-go and a nice little bronze pop on the cheeks. Then you have everything you need for the best everyday natural look.
I’m obsessed with my whole OAM Skin collection, but especially my face moisturizer. It’s amazing because you get that good hydration, and your face feels moisturized, but it’s not thick, and it’s not overwhelming. I’ve struggled in the past where skin care can be too thin or runny; this one is just the perfect, luxurious, silky experience. I love that.
On the hair side, I love a mousse for my curly look, and then there’s nothing like a good holding spray when you want to go bone straight so you don’t have flyaways. Got to contain the flyaways! And then I’m obsessed with the UnBrush. My assistant told me about it almost a year-and-some-change ago. And I guess this brush went crazy viral. But honestly, this brush is insane. It detangles your hair without taking it away and brushes through differently than a normal brush. It’s really easy. And I use it on my hair and my kids’s hair. Obsessed!
What fragrance do you mist on before you run out the door?
I’ve been obsessed with this Dolce & Gabbana Sicily fragrance for years, and also Baccarat Rouge 540 lately.
After a night out, what’s your routine once you’re home?
I’m kind of obsessed with showers, so I’ll take a shower when I come home from a long day or the night. I wash my face again. I do my OAM skin-care routine, and I get my butt in the bed. I’m pretty simple, to be honest. I may check some messages to see if I’ve missed anything. But then putting my phone down and turning it over is my rule, because I hate it when the bright light comes on, and messages come through at night. I pray, and then I go to bed!
