Romantic. Victorian. Flushed. These were the three words that defined Chloë Sevigny’s beauty look for the 2024 Met Gala, according to her makeup artist, Molly Greenwald.
Naturally, Sevigny's gown, designed by Turkish British designer Dilara Findikoglu, and custom jewels, crafted by Ana Khouri, inspired her hair and makeup. "We drew inspiration from the gown, which was made from repurposed Victorian fabric," Greenwald tells InStyle. "We flushed the cheek and stained the lip to fit the Victorian inspiration."
Of course, to nail the flushed-from-within effect, skin care was key. Greenwald prepped Sevigny’s skin with Dieux’s Auracle Eye Serum and Forever Eye Mask ($25) before giving her a face massage with the fittingly named Instant Angel moisturizer for plump and dewy skin. Then, for makeup, she set out to punch up the muted towns of the gown with a blushing complexion, courtesy of Dior’s Forever Skin Glow Foundation and Rosy Glow Blush in #001 Pink. Plus, a deep romantic lip to further punctuate the color story. While Greenwald used Chloe’s own discontinued Diorific Lipstick in 001 Violet Tattoo for her dark rose hue, you can get a similar effect with Dior Forever Liquid in 943 Forever Shock.
"I love to flush the cheek more in the upper and front of the face for this look," explains Greenwald, adding that she pressed in ultra-lightly layers to stain the pigments into the lip.
As for her hair, Sevigny’s hairstylist Mustafa Yanaz riffed on Victorian-style paintings and dreamt up a sleek, center-parted bun with intricate, bow-tied looped braids on either side. Yanaz credits Bumble and bumble’s Bb.Thickening Dryspun Texture Spray Light for locking the striking style into place.
As only she can, Sevigny bridged that gap between Victorian romance and latter-day cool girl with complete and utter ease.
