I’ll be the first to admit that even as a fashion editor, there are days when I’m simply at a loss for what to wear. My go-to for when I’m feeling uninspired is usually a classic pair of jeans. I’m a firm believer that the right pair can totally lift a mood and even increase confidence. That’s why it’s so important to invest in all different types of denim that you know will make you feel great when you put them on. But you may be wondering what you should pair with your jeans. One foolproof combination—which also happens to be a street style favorite—is denim on denim.
Alternatively known as double denim or a Canadian Tuxedo, denim on denim is the act of pairing two elements of an outfit cut from denim material. They don’t necessarily have to be the same type of denim paired together in order for it to work. For instance, you can wear a multi-tone denim top paired with plain denim bottoms. Conversely, you can also wear a matching monochromatic look for a more polished effect. The bottom line is don’t be afraid to wear denim with even more denim.
While the trend is arguably always in style, this year, in particular, we’ve seen double denim explode everywhere from our social media feeds and on the runways. Luckily, we’ve rounded up the 10 easiest ways to style denim on denim this fall and winter, so you always have something to wear.
With A Layered Coat
Double denim has the potential to be incredibly chic if styled correctly. In this case, it’s all about layering a completely different texture (and color) over your denim-on-denim look. A bright, saturated coat will do the trick. Make sure that the coat is longer than your denim button-up underneath to balance out the proportions.
With A Faux-Fur Collar
With the cozy season upon us, I highly recommend a denim jacket with a plush faux fur collar. Not only will it keep you warm and toasty through chilly temperatures, but the mixing of two different textures makes for a really cute outfit. To get the look, style the jacket as a top with one button closed. Pair it with relaxed loose-denim bottoms, shearling slippers, and a mini handbag.
With Minimalist Accessories
With a few small styling tips and tricks, even a minimalist can rock denim on denim. First, you’ll want to find a matching set—something in a darker wash will appear more sophisticated. Make sure your bottoms are high-waisted so that you can easily tuck in a collared top. Finally, wear a cinch-waist classic leather belt to create the appearance of an hourglass silhouette. Add in accessories like a matching leather clutch, boots, and wayfarer sunglasses to be styled to perfection.
With A Collarless Shirt
A collarless denim shirt is the ideal lightweight option for transitional weather. It’s not as thin as a regular shirt and not as heavy as a coat—but somewhere in between. Pair a classic blue option with matching baggy jeans and heels for an effortless look. Since this ensemble is meant to be super relaxed, you can keep your top untucked.
With A Sweater
An easy piece that works well with double denim is a wool or cashmere sweater. Make sure to opt for one in a different shade than the rest of your denim so that it doesn’t get lost underneath your layers. If your sweater is a v-neck you can even wear a white t-shirt underneath—especially on colder days. Mix in a cool studded belt and sleek penny loafers and you’ll be well on your way.
With A Denim Trench
Denim trench coats are having a major moment right now. Just take one look at It-girl brands like The Frankie Shop, EB Denim, and Reformation who all currently have their own denim iterations currently available. And with so many ways to style them, their popularity is really no surprise. My recommendation would be to wear your denim trench with—you guessed it—blue denim pants. Bonus points if you find a pair with high ankle slits.
With A Maxi Skirt
A denim pleated maxi skirt can be found everywhere right now from luxury designer labels like Dior or Alaïa to more accessible brands like Mango and Zara. No matter your budget, a long denim skirt has the ability to appear elegant and expensive because of its thicker material. Pair the feminine-style skirt with a workwear-inspired denim cargo jacket to find the perfect middle.
With Folded Cuffs
If you’re someone who frequently has to take a trip to the tailor, this next denim trend is for you. Gone are the days of having to hem your pants or sleeves because cuffed denim season is officially here. Not to mention, you’ll also be able to show off your favorite footwear—a major plus for those pointed-toe stilettos.
With A Boxy Jacket
If you’re thinking of buying an oversized jacket to wear with jeans this season, you should consider investing in one made of denim. Besides its beautiful blue color and practicality when it comes to layering, it’s a bit more unexpected than other materials but still goes with any pair of jeans. It’ll also probably last you forever since denim never really goes out of style. Trust me on this.
With A Patchwork Blazer
A blazer and jeans is a classic structured double denim look, but if you want to add even more dimension, try pairing your baggy jeans with a unique patchwork blazer. With its different washes and asymmetry, your blazer will add a whole new level of visual interest to any Canadian tuxedo.
