She wore a two-piece set from a surprising brand to last night's CFDA Awards.
If you needed one more reason to believe that Ella Emhoff, the stepdaughter of Democratic presidential nominee and current Vice President of the United States Kamala Harris, is a bona fide fashion girl, her two-piece outfit brought together American heritage and a forward-looking ethos for what may be the coolest outfit at the 2024 CFDA Fashion Awards. The ceremony was held at The American Museum of Natural History in New York City and Emhoff wore a special outfit from Coach. Not only has the brand cemented itself as a Gen Z favorite, but the label’s commitment to being green and sustainable has garnered attention from It Girls like Emhoff.
The look, which was a top and skirt, featured a huge bow, which has become a house code for Coach, and was the result of a special team-up. In a press release, Coach explained that Emhoff's knit top was "crafted in collaboration with an artisan based in upstate New York" and that the skirt was made from deadstock fabric. It goes even deeper, however, with Coach sharing that the wool top was "sourced from yarn cards and pieces of knit garments broken down and re-spun into new yarn by the artisan." The craftspeople at Coach later embellished the piece with deadstock beads and sequins.
The entire look was meant to capture Coach's "vision of circularity" and showcase its commitment to reducing environmental impact through sustainable design and manufacturing practices. Emhoff finished the look with her signature glasses, one dangling spider earring (it's spooky season, after all), and a chain-strap shoulder bag.
Of course, away from the bright lights of the CFDA Awards, Emhoff is gearing up for what may be another chance to attend a presidential inauguration. She made fashion history when she arrived at President Joe Biden's 2021 inauguration ceremony in Miu Miu and Batsheva—and fans could be getting another big moment if her stepmother is victorious in the upcoming election.
“Kamala came into my life when I was 14—famously a very easy time for a teenager,” Emhoff said in her speech at the Democratic National Convention, where she introduced Harris. “Like a lot of young people, I didn’t always understand what I was feeling, but no matter what, Kamala was there for me. She was patient, caring, and always took me seriously. She’s never stopped listening to me, and she’s not going to stop listening to all of us.”
