The reigning queen of rom-coms gives a masterclass in Old Hollywood elegance.
There’s something undeniably glamorous about Scarlett Johansson. Maybe it’s her penchant for gowns that channel Old Hollywood elegance—or maybe it’s the fact that she has genuinely mastered the art of the bold red lip. Whatever it may be, all signs point to an actress that simply dazzles on the red carpet, no matter the decade.
A Hollywood veteran, Johansson has been a working actress since 1994, when she appeared in the movie North at the age of nine. But it wasn't until her breakout role in Lost in Translation—for which she won an Academy Award—that Johansson's star really began its meteoric rise. Since then, she's been a regular fixture at awards shows around the world. Keep scrolling for our favorite red carpet looks from over two decades of style from Scarlett Johansson.
Pretty in Pink
On the heels of the film's New York City premiere, Johansson traveled to Berlin to celebrate Fly Me to the Moon in a pink sequined dress courtesy of the British fashion designer Erdem. The look is straight off the runway, pulled from the brand's spring 2024 collection.
A Prada Set
The world premiere of Fly Me to the Moon took place at AMC Lincoln Square Theater in New York City, with Johansson and her husband, Colin Jost, in attendence. The actress wore a custom Prada pencil skirt and matching tank top complete with a sparkling crystal trim.
Summer Whites
For the premiere of Wes Anderson's Asteroid City, Johansson—who plays Midge Campbell in the film—opted for an easy breezy summer dress by Carolina Herrera.
Bubblegum Pink
Johansson tapped Prada again for her Asteroid City red carpet look at Cannes, where she wore a tailored pink gown featuring white peek-a-boo straps up top.
Gilded Glamour
Johansson dazzled in a sheer champagne gown by Oscar de la Renta for the 92nd annual Academy Awards. She was nominated for her roles in both Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit.
Sequins and Feathers
In a custom Versace gown, Johansson celebrated her BAFTA nominations for Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit.
Plenty of Polka Dots
Johansson deviated slightly for her usual uniform and opted for a fun, polka dot Balmain dress at the Film Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica, California.
Pink Pants
For the premiere of her wartime comedy Jojo Rabbit, Johansson stole the show in a custom Miu Miu ensemble, designed alongside stylist Molly Dickson.
Red Hot
Johansson attended the Cannes premiere of her film Marriage Story in a dazzling strapless Versace gown with a high leg slit.
Strapless Silver
In her Marvel era, Johansson shimmered in a silver Versace dress with a sheer back panel for the premiere of Avengers: Endgame. She completed the look with a Jimmy Choo clutch.
Eden-Inspired
In keeping with that year's theme, "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination," Johansson choose an Eden-inspired floral gown designed by Marches for the 2018 Met Gala.
A Vision in White
Attending in support of her boyfriend Colin Jost, who hosted the 2018 Emmys alongside Michael Che, Johansson wore a custom Balmain gown with just a hint of sparkle.
A Belted Ballgown
Johansson balanced a soft, feminine Alaïa dress with a chain metal belt and short hairstyle for the 89th annual Academy Awards red carpet in 2017.
In June, Johansson flew to New York City for the premiere of Rough Night, donning a silver disco ball-esque Michael Kors dress for the occasion.
Emerald Green Goddess
Johansson opted for emerald green at the 87th annual Oscars, wearing a custom Versace gown with a Swarovski crystal collar.
A Hot Pink Jumpsuit
In a rare departure from her go-to gowns, Johansson wore a hot pink jumpsuit from Zuhair Murad for the MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles.
Drop Waist Drama
Channeling Old Hollywood glam, Johansson arrived at the 2012 Met Gala in an embellished gold gown from Dolce & Gabbana.
Notable Neutrals
Soon after her engagement to actor Ryan Reynolds, Johansson attended the Met Gala wearing a champagne dress from Dolce & Gabbana. The pair would go on to tie the knot that September.
Gleaming Gold
Johansson sparkled in a shimmering gold mini dress at the BRIT Awards back in 2004.
Jewel Tone
For her Academy Awards debut, Johansson was the picture of early aughts elegance in a green gown. That year, she won Best Actress for her role in the now legendary film Lost in Translation.
Old Hollywood Glamour
A simple black gown paired with a red lip was all it took for Johansson to dazzle at the 2004 Tony Awards in New York City.
Hello Yellow
It’s not quite Andie Anderson’s dress, but it sure looks like it. For the 2004 Met Gala, Johansson gave a masterclass in minimalist elegance thanks to Calvin Klein.
A Timeless Two Piece
At just 14 years old, Johansson hit the red carpet for the premiere of Bowfinger in 1999. She wore an elegant black silk ensemble for the occasion, proving that some stars really are stylish from the get-go.
