The German sandals are a summer essential.
Part of my personality is being German. It’s funny, though, because I didn’t realize how German I was until I met my partner, who’s Italian. Every time I’d do something, he’d say, “You’re so German,” with a laugh—and he knows, as he lived in Berlin for five years, too. Open windows in the wintertime for fresh air? Yep. Nod my head in an approving way? I do it way too often. Wear comfy Birkenstocks the second it’s warm enough to slip into sandals? You bet I do. And it’s probably one of the most German things about me.
I remember when I was younger and living in Germany, everyone was wearing the classic, two-strap cork sandal. Though I wasn’t a huge fan back then, I get it now; as I’ve gotten older and placed more importance on comfort and foot health, Birkenstocks have crept to the top of my most-worn list—and the best part? So many styles are on sale for the Fourth of July, but not just anywhere. They’re marked down at the under-the-radar retailer, Gilt, a fashion editor’s (aka, mine) best-kept secret for scoring incredible pieces at some of the lowest prices, ever.
All you have to do to access the members-only details is sign up with your email, and et voilà, you’ll be so impressed with all the discounts, you might even think they’re typos. I mean, $80 Birkenstocks? Yes, they’re selling out.

If you’re on the edge about Birkenstocks, I understand. I was for the longest time, too. But, when a shoe’s as good as this German sandal, sometimes, you just have to give in and be okay with that. In fact, it’s no wonder so many celebrities, like Margot Robbie, who wore the iconic sandal in the hit film Barbie, to Reese Witherspoon, a regular Birkenstock wearer for things like school pickup and errand-running, are fans. Katie Holmes and Gwyneth Paltrow are big wearers, too, and while the fan base consists of a lot of Hollywood moms, it’s not solely for people running after kids. I wear mine for everything.

What’s more, Birkenstocks are designed for maximum comfort and durability, meaning you can wear them for a really long time. I’ve had mine for about three years now, and aside from the insole, they look as good as new. The exterior is either made from a durable leather or birko-leather (leather alternative), with a cushy cork insole that molds to your unique foot shape—it’s comfortable and long-lasting.
And, while Birkenstocks rarely get marked down, Gilt has an exclusive inventory of discounted options for the Fourth of July that are, as you’d expect, selling fast. So, secure your pair now.
