It’s so good, I own three.
Last summer I became so obsessed with the versatility of a simple white tank top that I pretty much wore the single one I owned into the ground. I paired it with jeans and a bold heel for dressed-down nights out, a slinky slip skirt and kitten heels for dinner dates, and, most often, with cut-offs and sneakers. It was in such heavy rotation that, when I revisited it last month, I wasn’t totally shocked to discover that last summer’s go-to top—once optic white—was now dull, stained, and piling.
As a creature of habit, my plan was just to re-order the same top. But, as luck would have it, it was no longer in stock. And while I often put a lot of time (arguably, too much) into finding the perfect basics, I needed a white tank yesterday. So, without much thought, I grabbed Gap’s on-sale Modern Cropped Tank Top. And, TBH, it might be my best impulse purchase to date—so good, in fact, that I immediately bought two more.

The tank top is available in eight colors, including classic white and black, as well as nautical-inspired stripes, and starts at just $9. I grabbed it in white and immediately fell in love with pretty much everything about it. The tank is the ideal weight—it has just enough thickness to not be see-through but is breathable enough for summer—and length. While crop tops can often lean a little too short for my taste, this one hits just at the waistband of mid-rise jeans. In my opinion, it looks more tailored than cropped, and shoppers agree.
“Most [tanks] are either absurdly long or too cropped,” but not this one, wrote one customer who called it the “perfect length tank top.” And according to another person, it’s the ideal length for high-waisted bottoms. You get that flattering, tucked-in look without actually having to shove a bunch of fabric into the waistband of your pants.

But it’s not just the length and weight that sold me on this top, it’s also unbelievably soft and hugs my body just right, a fit one person called “very flattering.” “It feels good on the skin,” said a fan while another person wrote that it feels “nicer than” most other budget tank tops. And as another customer succinctly put it, it’s a “great, quality basic.”
