And it's got that red lip, classic thing that we like.
The Great star Elle Fanning skipped her usual ethereal gowns and princess-adjacent looks for a masculine take on red carpet dressing. At the 2024 Tony Awards in New York City last night, she arrived on the carpet in a tailored tuxedo from Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello.
Her suit included a looser and boxier fitted jacket and wide-leg pants, giving the outfit a more relaxed vibe, though she did up the sex appeal by skipping out on a top underneath and allowing the plunging silhouette to take the spotlight. She finished the outfit with a sparkling diamond choker from Cartier and pointy, satin slingbacks. To add a dash of femininity and screen siren vampiness to the look, she swiped on a bold red lip color and wore her blonde hair in a flippy bob style with a deep side part.
A lady in a tuxedo isn’t a new thing, but when red carpets are more commonly flooded with gowns than tailoring, it’s always a fresh take on flashbulb-ready fashion. Fanning’s look recalls iconic women who have embraced the borrowed-from-the-boys style, including Madonna, who famously embraced the vibe for her “Express Yourself” music video in 1989 and resurrected again for her MDMA Tour in 2012. Before her, Hollywood icon Marlene Dietrich (among others) made menswear her signature and often added a top hat to give her outfits an extra layer of detail.
Currently, Fanning is in New York City and New Jersey filming the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, with Timothée Chalamet. She’s playing Suze Rotolo, one of Dylan’s girlfriends. Dylan die-hards will recognize her as the inspiration behind some of the crooner’s biggest hits, like “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright,” “One Too Many Mornings,” “Tomorrow Is a Long Time,” and “Boots of Spanish Leather.” She’s also credited as one of the people who introduced him to politics and activism, as well as exposing him to poet Arthur Rimbaud and playwright Bertolt Brecht. Dylan often cited those two names as major influences on his songwriting.
