Shouldn’t several summers trapped between hot asphalt and claustrophobic concrete skyscrapers, not to mention my Alabama roots, make me immune to sweltering heat? No, but it has pushed me to invest in a great primer for oily skin and think more strategically about staying cool—and looking polished—under heated pressure. I’ve always felt complete and put-together in co-ord sets, (Chanel suits and retro tracksuits, for example), but, since tweed and velour aren’t exactly sweat-proof, I’m swapping stuffier fabrics for lightweight linen materials that are basically like wearable A/Cs.

Madewell pieces and seasonal edits, notably its linen collections, are like a summer grab bag: Close your eyes, reach in, and pull out exactly what you need every time. I looked like a firecracker and felt cooler than an ice cube in the 100-percent linen rouge top and midi skirt. Even if you opt for one of the neutral colors, skin-baring details, such as the tie-back top and skirt slit, will steal the show at brunch or lounging beachside.

Fact: You can totally wear long sleeves in the summer if it’s 100-percent linen. This long-sleeved button-down and the matching shorts are an incredible workaround for looking like you tried way harder than you did. To increase your costs per wear, I suggest buying it oversized and wearing the top as a cover-up or over a mini skirt for an everyday-appropriate no-pants look.
