It’s so practical, I might have to give it a try.
I’m absolutely not a short-short type of girl. I never—nor will I ever—wear the ultra teeny-tiny cut-offs; not only because I simply don’t feel comfortable in them, but they just don’t seem like practical pants to wear while running out and about (or sitting on the subway). While I pretty much have written off shorts altogether, instead wearing this Katie Holmes-approved style for the next three months, Camila Mendes convinced me to test out shorts (err, capris?) that are a bit more wearable.
The actress was seen at the ultra-chic Chanel dinner during the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival—which Holmes attended, BTW!— and as you’d expect of every attendee at said dinner, they were dressed to the nines. That said, I was particularly fond of Mendes’s look because it was oh-so-simple, but still on-trend and chic—and I never thought I would call a pair of shorts chic.
Mendes wore textured leather Bermuda shorts (yes, they’re back!) with a simple white short-sleeve top that had dainty, frilly detailing along the neck and sleeves. She tucked it into her Bermudas to keep the outfit streamlined, rounding out everything with strappy black heels and a chain-link Chanel bag. Love!

I want everything in Mendes’s look, especially that Chanel bag, but what I’ll most realistically be wearing next week are Bermuda shorts. New York summers can get pretty toasty, and while I would be totally content wearing long pants all season long, sometimes, it’s just not possible given the humidity. So, Bermudas are a great in-between; as I mentioned, I refuse to wear short-shorts, and this Mendes-worn style offers ample coverage while still providing leg exposure, aka, some much-needed ventilation.
Bermudas are actually pretty versatile, too; they can be worn with sneakers or heels, sandals or espadrilles—pretty much any summer shoe you have laying around. Not to mention, tank tops, button-downs, and breezy white tees are all fair game, too.
So, while some people (me!) might be quick to write off this divisive trend, it’s actually worth a try if you don’t want to wear cut-offs and it’s too hot for long pants. I think I just convinced myself to try a pair (or two).
