Skater girl vibes to a T.
I have been feeling extra nostalgic as of late. Maybe it’s because the summertime season always reminds me of the school’s-out-for-summer vibes I used to experience when I was younger, or maybe it’s because I’m aching for that three-months summer vacation that I’ll never have again. But alas, I’m feeling extra sappy for the 2000s, and seeing Dakota Johnson’s latest outfit only made me even more, well, nostalgic.
Johnson has been busy filming her new movie, Materialists, in New York City, which I’m so excited to watch given I’m a huge rom-com fan—not to mention a huge Johnson fan, too. Her on-set outfits have been nothing short of amazing, either, but this latest one takes the cake: Johnson was photographed taking a stroll in the park in a no-fuss, cool-girl ensemble that I definitely wore in middle school.
The actress wore a black, mid-length floral-printed dress with a sweetheart neckline and thin straps—truly the quintessential summer dress. It’s easy, it’s breezy, and it can be styled up or down, with Johnson taking the latter route. With a sweatshirt tied around her hips and black, low-top Converse in tow, the actress looked like the coolest skater girl (hey, Avril!) that you probably wanted to be friends with in school.

Johnson’s throwback combo feels particularly nostalgic because, well, Converse! The easygoing sneaker has been around for decades, and while it started as a basketball shoe, fashion girlies everywhere were—and still are—wearing it with dresses, skirts, and everything in between. It’s a versatile sneaker with a rich history, and TBH, it’ll never go away.
Not to mention, summertime sees an influx of dress-and-sneaker outfits, which is also why Johnson’s outfit hit a chord. Dresses offer an airy, breezy silhouette you can wear on the hottest of days, while Converse ensure you’ll walk comfortably all day long. Of course, the juxtaposition of styles is ultimately what makes the look a lewk.
So, here’s what I plan on doing: I’ll be recreating Johnson’s on-set look from this day forward. Because floral dresses and Converse sneakers are basically summer’s valedictorians.
