One thing is clear: This trend isn’t going away.
One important thing to have when it comes to fashion is, well, an open mind. Many trends might cause some eyebrow raises (hey, I’ve tried some, only to realize, oh, it’s actually good). And while it’s obvious that not all sartorial ‘things’ are for everyone, there’s one footwear style that’s blowing up big time, and I think it’s 100 percent worth trying before writing it off.
Summer is all about toes out (duh!), but this season, people are taking things to an entirely new level of full exposure with the ever-popular mesh shoe trend—and Alexandra Daddario is the latest celeb to hop aboard the style. The actress, who attended the F1 Grand Prix in Monaco over the weekend, looked like summer personified in a quintessential sundress covered in a print of poppy yellow roses. How romantic! The midi had a fitted waist that flared into a billowy, mid-length, A-line skirt, that’s ideal for showing off your shoes, especially if they’re as eye-catching (or, invisible?) as Daddario’s. She wore see-through flats that you might actually have to squint to see, and before you say, “Ummm, see-through flats, Eva?” take a look.
Daddario wore mesh ballerinas with a black seam upper that gave them a bit of an outline. Had it not been for this contrasting detailing, it’s possible you would’ve thought she stepped out barefoot in Monaco. But alas, she didn’t, even though she might’ve wanted to trick you into thinking that.

Daddario’s mesh flats were in a soft pink color that made them appear even more invisible, but if you think about it, the rise of this mesh or netted ballerina is a clear successor of the PVC trend that’s been causing a stir in the fashion world for years. Said Cinderella slipper has been worn by the likes of Amal Clooney, Jennifer Lopez, and Hailey Bieber, but unlike the style that’s typically made from PVC plastic, the mesh shoe is more flexible, as it’s made from, well, mesh that actually moves with you. Not to mention, it’s more breathable, too, which makes the shoe a no-brainer for summer.
See-through ballerinas come in a range of sheerness, from netted styles like this that are slightly less invisible to nearly naked options that’ll have people doing a double take. The good thing is that no matter which pair you choose, the styling options are endless, as they pair well with jeans, dress, bermuda shorts, and midi skirts. The trickiest part, however, will be reminding yourself that you’re actually wearing shoes, because when you look down, you might think you forgot to wear a pair.
